Multiple fires, fed by the heat, burned this weekend thousands of hectares of vegetation across Spain, killing one firefighter and devouring the parched soils. The Canary Islands, near 5,000 villagers have fled their homes.
Since Friday, from north to south of the country submerged by a wave of African heat, firefighters, military, or armed volunteers by bucket struggle day and night against the flames, trying to save homes and prevent the fire to gain ground.
While temperatures were down Sunday in the North, allowing firefighters to slow or stop the spread of fires, the south-east Spain remained a high risk area: that is, in the region Alicante, another fire broke out Sunday, which killed one firefighter and injured three others. In the evening, the flames had invaded a thick pine forest in Torre de Maçanes and remained out of control. A camp for 130 children were evacuated.
4700 EVACUEES THE CANARIES
In the Canary Islands, more than 4,700 people were evacuated since Friday in both mountainous islands of La Gomera and Tenerife, where the fire burned 900 acres in two days, especially in the natural park of Garajonay, Heritage Unesco World.
A La Gomera, thick clouds of smoke rose Sunday over the reliefs from the center of the island, which extends the park with rare plants, reported an AFP photographer. 1500 two villagers were forced from their homes. Hotels, sports halls or schools, all full to bursting, were turned into camps. About 150 people were accommodated in Vallehermoso, said Maria Dolores Arteaga Amaro, an employee of the mayor who took care of organizing the reception, the majority "of people aged over 65 and children". First fire broke out on August 4th at La Gomera before being mastered and then to wake up Friday. OVER 132,000 ACRES BURNED
Spain, hit by an unprecedented drought last seventy years, this summer saw her the most devastating fires last decade: between January 1 and August 5, 132,300 hectares of vegetation burned, according to the Ministry agriculture.
This week, the drought has combined with a heat wave from Africa and the lack of moisture in the atmosphere in an explosive cocktail: since Friday, multiple fires broke out across the country, as in the province Ourense in Galicia in the northwest, where the fire was controlled Sunday after burning 1,500 acres.
The fires also devastated hundreds of hectares in Catalonia in the northeast, in the Guadalajara region or in the natural park Cabañeros, in central Spain.
