A video showing some twenty-one UN observers abducted by a rebel group in Syria, Wednesday, March 6, was posted on the Internet Thursday by the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (OSDH), while negotiations were underway to secure their release. This is the first of its kind since the abduction beginning of the conflict in Syria, there are nearly two years.
The video shows six hostages in military dress, seated next to each other in a room. One of the officers was as a captain of the "Battalion Philippine contingent to the UN" responsibility since 1974 to enforce a cease-fire between Israel and Syria over the Golan Heights, the Force observation of disengagement on the Golan Heights (UNDOF). The Golan is largely occupied by Israel.
The officer explained that when the peacekeepers approached Jamla village located on the border of Golan, bombings and gunfire erupted. The quota is then stopped and "civilians" blue helmet helped, he said, dividing in different places for their safety. According to Manila and UN soldiers were captured during a "supply mission" near Jamla.
A rebel group calling itself the "Martyrs' Brigade Yarmouk" claimed the abduction and observers said the OSDH he "did not intend to [the] abuse." The rebels, however, require, for free, the withdrawal of the Syrian army Jamla, situated 1.5 km from the cease-fire.
UNDOF officials began negotiations to free the observers. The UN said that the force was "in contact with [the kidnappers] by phone and confirmed that they were not abused." The representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton, demanded Thursday liberation "immediate and unconditional" observers.
