The U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday, August 30 launched an investigation into the CIA in 2008, concerning in particular the death in Afghanistan and Iraq two prisoners suspected of terrorism had ended without any charges being brought against the agency. The Department waives the prosecution as admissible evidence would be insufficient to obtain a conviction beyond reasonable doubt, justifies the Minister of Justice, Eric Holder, in a statement.
The investigation initially involved the destruction of videotapes of interrogations in secret prisons created after September 11, terrorism suspects, during which the CIA would have used the technique of "waterboarding," or simulated drowning , described as torture by associations defending human rights and President Barack Obama. This part of the survey, conducted in its entirety by the prosecutor John Durham, was completed in 2010, but the Minister of Justice, Eric Holder, had meanwhile extended to cases of 101 detainees.
WELCOMES THE CIA
But the Justice Department announced in 2011 that criminal investigations would be conducted in-depth on the death of two prisoners: Gul Rahman, died in 2002 in an Afghan center clandestine CIA and Manadel Al Jamadi, who died in 2003 the Iraqi prison of Abu Ghraib.
David Petraeus, the CIA director, welcomed the decision to close the investigation and sent a message to its employees to thank them for their cooperation. Associations for the defense of human rights have, however, regretted the closure of the investigation. "The announcement of Attorney General Holder is disappointing because the widespread and systematic use of torture in the aftermath of September 11 is well documented," said Melina Milazzo Association Human Rights First.
