Just over a quarter of Germans think Greece should remain in the eurozone, according to a poll published Monday in the Financial Times.
According to the survey, conducted in Germany, Italy, Spain, France and Great Britain, by Harris for the business daily, with a thousand adults in each country, 54% of Germans are against a continuation of Greece in the euro, against 21% of Italians and 27% of Spaniards.
Nearly half - 49% - of the Germans believe that Greece will not be able to reform itself enough to no longer need financial support from the EU, against 12% of Italians and 30% of Spaniards, according the Harris poll.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is facing a strong reluctance of public opinion against granting any additional time in Athens, which must reduce its spending by about 12 billion euros over the next two years to to meet the conditions of its international creditors, the European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank. The "troika" has suspended the payment of the last tranche of financial aid plan of 174 billion euros to avoid bankruptcy Greece.
Feelings respective French and British approach to the Germans, even though they are less pronounced, the eventual disposition of Athens by the euro 29% undecided in France and 43% in Britain which does not belong to the monetary union.
